1. Attending your first Lesson
Arrive early, about 15 minutes before the start of the lesson. Ensure the swimmer has not eaten a meal in the last hour. Don’t forget Swim wear (trunks not shorts for boys as shorts fill with air and drag in the water) and for girls a one piece swim suit is best, a Towel , Swimming hat (this can be purchased for £1 at the lesson) a snack and drink for after the lesson. Parents should bring some clean flip-flops or be prepared to remove shoes.
We do not encourage the use of swimming goggles until children are competent swimmers. Younger children spend far longer playing around with them, complaining that they are leaking and generally paying more attention to the goggles than the swimming teacher!
Babies and Toddlers still in nappies will need to wear water nappies. I also recommend you purchase a baby/toddler water suit, which means the youngsters stay warm in the water.
2. My child is nervous
If your child is nervous, arrive 30 minutes early to watch the class beforehand. Swimming pools can be quite daunting for young children that do not have much water experience. It is very important to remain calm and positive about the lesson.
Feel free to call me beforehand to talk through any concerns. I have heard it all before in my 19 years of teaching swimming, From children who get upset, to those children that are confident - on holiday - but refuse to get in for swimming lessons.
Please expect your child to take a few weeks to settle in to the routine of their lessons. To get to know their new swimming teacher, class mates, and familiarise themselves with the environment.
Most children do get in and off they go on week one. But It all depends on the nature of your child as some are cautious and some are more adventurous!
3. Can we take photographs?
Unfortunately, due to child protection, we cannot and do not allow any photography or filming in or around the swimming pools. This policy is initiated by the schools and we fully implement it.
4. Do you offer private lessons?
Yes we do. Your child can have a one-to-one lesson or a one-to-two lesson with a friend or relative. We recommend this for particularly nervous swimmers or those that may require more attention that can be given within a group lesson. This is also a good option to fast track your child, for example if you are going on holiday and would like them swimming by a certain date. Although we can make no guarantees, what we can promise is that they will progress far quicker in a private lesson. I can also offer private lessons in your own pool, if you are lucky enough to have one. Prices start at £20 per lesson please contact me for more information.
5. My Child is always getting ear infections!
There are many preventive products’ available for this problem and they can all be purchased online at www.swimshop.co.uk
We recommend
Swim Ear - ear drops for evaporating water leaving the ear clean and water free.
WIN Ear Bands – Adjustable head bands witch cover the ear.
Ear plugs can also be used however they do have a tendency to fall out so please don’t buy blue ones as they can be very hard to find. |
